Early Ohio Settlers

This page contains a link to a table of names of early settlers (especially those prior to the 1820 Census) in Ohio from a few county histories. These are the publications that the names were taken from:

This is not an exhaustive list of names from any of these publication, but they should be useful to those researching early Ohio settlers. The table contains the year reference for each person, if any, the county and township, the name and surname, the publication, the page number, and any notes or comments.

Brown Family

My great-grandfather was named Barclay Brown Hopkins. I always wondered about his name. I thought at first he was named after Robert Barclay, the Quaker theologian. But why Brown for a middle name? Then I found a man in early Ohio records named Barclay Brown.

Barclay was a son of William Brown, who had come west from Burlington County, New Jersey. They lived for a time in Warren county, then settled in nearby Preble county.

Barclay Brown was born in 1822 in Ohio, probably in Preble county (Wm Brown was counted in the 1820 Census there). Barclay Brown Hopkins was born in 1839 in Warren County, Ohio. It's possible that William Hopkins, Barclay's father, named him after the young son of a fellow New Jersey Quaker and neighbor.

The following is a summary of what I know about Barclay Brown.
